Windows 10 Tutorial: Change Folder Picture

Windows, by default, shows a perfectly fine thumbnail preview of the contents of a folder on its icon. But it also allows you to change the picture for the icon of any given folder.

With the choice of an image file in any of the following formats: JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIF, TIFF, BMP, ICO, WMF, DIB, JFID, JPE, FPX, or MIX — pretty comprehensive list, truth be told.

To fix various Windows 10/11 problems, we recommend Outbyte PC Repair:

Of course, changing the icon of a folder no longer will no longer display the default folder picture or a thumbnail preview. Instead, it will look something like what is shown in the image below. Very handy for those that deal with multiple folders, and want each of them to be quickly and easily distinguishable.

Changing this is easy enough.

Simply right-click, or press and hold on the folder, and then click or tap on Properties.

Go to the Customize tab up top, and in the Folder pictures section, click on the Choose File button.

Now, navigate to and select the image file you want to use as the folder picture, and click Open in the windows that pops up to set things up.

If you want to restore the default folder picture, go to the Customize tab again and then click or tap on the Restore Default button that is displayed, and things will go back to default.

  1. I like to change the folder picture for every folder I have :)) because I find this makes them unique. I also like changing the pictures from time to time.
