What is a Windows 10 Driver?
Well here’s the best way to explain this for those who don’t know. A driver is a piece of software that tells your computer how to handle a device or other software.
Here’s a quick example.
You go to a store and buy a web camera or web cam.
What should happen is, when you get back home and plug it in, Windows 10 will automatically detect the new hardware and set it up.
Done deal, no problem.
Unfortunately, sometimes when you have equipment that comes from a smaller and less established vendor, things don’t always work that well.
In that case, Windows 10 will try and automatically detect the Windows 10 driver and if it can’t, it’ll tell you that you need to get the driver from the vendor.
Basically just like Windows 10 Codecs, drivers are really, really important.
Now like I said before, in most cases, Windows 10 will find the driver for you but if Windows 10 doesn’t have the driver you need, you can often find drivers you need on the manufacturer’s website.
Drivers are used for a TON of stuff.
Stuff like:
- Storage devices like hard disk, CD-ROM, and floppy disk buses (ATA, SATA, SCSI)
- file system support
- Image scanners
- Digital cameras
- printers
- video adapters
- Network cards
- pointing devices such as mice, keyboards, USB, etc
- Sound cards
Basically, drivers power Windows and allow the Operating System to interact with other software and hardware.

I have a new ACER computer, but don’t know how to set it up, can you help?
There is at least one piece of hardware that Windows has me QUITE annoyed about — the LifeCam Studio. I bought it because o the extensive on-screen interface. And, also, it was compatible with ManyCam because it didn’t start with the StartUp menu. Now, MS has decided that the software for the LifeCam Studio is INCOMPATIBLE with and have blocked it.
Even if I DIDN’T have the ManyCam software, I would still be annoyed. The things that the LifeCam Studio software could do — pan, tilt, zoom and more — cannot be replicated on the Camera app. Further, Windows has decided that it’s the ManyCam software that it will use for the second camera. Good idea except that Windows starts ManyCam BEFORE the LifeCam has started rendering both of them useless. Further, sometimes the LifeCam ‘on camera’ light will come on and NOT go off untill and unless I disconnect it. Since there is no corresponding indicator for the built-in camera, I have to wonder if IT is on more that one might think. Since the microphone and camera programs are run together, but the microphone starts first — what exactly is going on? I’m probably just paranoid.
Will this work on an iPhone 7 or is that a ridiculous question to ask?
