Groove Music handles the music files, and Movies & TV app manage the video media files. Well, they get the work done, but they are simple apps.
I, myself like Potplayer when it comes to playing any media files whether they are audio or video. And I am sure you must have a favorite one yourself. So, How can you change or set default video media player in Windows 10?
Well, if you are new to Windows 10 this might be a little tricky for you. So, I’ll be guiding you through it.
Change Default Video Player for All Files
To change or set default video media player in Windows 10 to follow the instructions below and it should be easy-peasy for you.
Step-1: First you have to go to the Settings. For that Right-Click on the Start menu and you’ll see a Settings option click on it to open.
Step-2: After you are in the Settings, look for the Apps option. Click it.
Step-3: Now click on the Default apps from the left sidebar. Then under the Video player click on the current app, you will see the list of all video players available on your PC. Select that you to want to set. If you don’t find the app, you can install that from Store.
See, it was straightforward. You can even change the settings for music files in the same way in Music Player.
Once you change the default app, it saves automatically. So, from the next time you open a video file, it will open the app you assigned.
Choosing Default Apps by File Type
This method is for assigning different video file types to different media players. Not all media players support all kinds of video file types. So you can assign specific ones to an app that helps them.
For that follow the same steps from Step-1 to Step-3 above to go to the Default apps settings. After that, follow the below instructions.
Step-1: When you’re in the Default apps settings you will see an option Choose default apps by file type down below. Click it.
Step-2: You will see different extensions listed on the left side. Browse through the list to find your desired extension and click it. Again you will have a list of apps to select. So, select the one you want, and it saves automatically.
Changing the Default App while opening the File
Well, if you don’t want the extra trouble of going to the Settings to change or set default video media player then this option is the right one for you. Just follow the configuration below to do it.
Step-1: Go to the media file that you want to open and right-click it. Hover the mouse over Open with. Then click on Choose another app.
Step-2: You’ll get a list of apps next, select the one you want and then check the box below that says Always use this app to open .mp4 files (.mp4 is the extension of your file). In the end, click on the OK button.
And you’re done! The changes save automatically. So any file with that extension will open with the app you assigned as default from now on.
