Method 1 - Power Plan Settings

You have first to check the power plan settings to check if it’s ok or not. I mean some options there or wrong power plan can cause this problem. So just follow the instructions below and check if you have the right power project.

Step-1: For that firstly you have to go to the Start menu and then click on Settings.

Step-2: After that go to Systems and then Power and Sleep. After that look for additional power settings and click it.

Step-3: Once you are in the Additional power settings you would see a screen displaying power options for your PC. You can customize the options according to your needs. Next, click on the Plan settings option.

Step-4: Once you’re in the settings go and click on the Change advanced power settings. Then scroll to Multimedia settings from all the options. In that select When sharing media and under that select Allow the computer to sleep if it’s not selected.

Method 2 - Update Device Drivers

Believe me when I say that this is the best fix of all. This method is one of the most common reasons for Windows 10 won’t sleep problem. A backdated driver causes compatibility issues which cause this underlying problem.

For that, you need to update all your drivers to be compatible with your hardware. Now you can do it in 2 ways.

  • Firstly, you can go to your manufacturers’ website and search for your model and related drivers. Usually, there is always an option to download the drivers directly from there for every PC. You just go there and download the ones you need.
  • Secondly, you can update the Windows for instance. It will automatically update and install the drivers it may require for compatibility issues. It’s the easiest way to get your hands on the latest versions of drivers. Just follow the path below and install them.

Even if there is hardware that needs extra attention or updating than going to Device manager and update from there.

Method 3 - Certain Power Requests by Apps

There could be another substantial reason for Windows 10 not sleeping. As many applications or programs are running and all of them, require different power requirements.

There could be some application or program running in background preventing the Windows from sleeping. So it’s important that you find out what that is and close it. The extra power required for the program may disrupt the sleep settings and whatsoever.

If you want to find out what the requests are? Then you have to go to the Command Prompt and see using a standard command.

Step-1: First of all you have to open the command prompt as administrator. For that go to Start menu and search for cmd and open it by right-clicking and selecting Run as administrator.

Step-2: type the command powercfg–lastwake. This command tends to find out what program is causing the system to wake up every time it goes to sleep.

You will be able to find any power requests, but if there isn’t any, it will show you the result NONE. If there is, then take note and close the programs or even uninstall them if that helps.

Method 4 - Windows Troubleshooting

Though many of you don’t even use this feature Windows 10 has a very excellent troubleshooter to help you identify and let along resolve any issues that might have occurred.

So for this one, you have to:

Step-1: Go to Control Panel and navigate to troubleshooting.

Step-1: Got to Start menu and search for Run or press Windows Key + R and it will open it. After that, type msconfig in the open box and hit Enter.

Step-2: Under the startup options uncheck all the startup items. But you have to restart to save the changes.

If the issue resolves, then you have to find out which startup app is causing this by unchecking one by one.

Method 6 - Restore Default Settings

Sometimes restoring all the setting to defaults fixes the problem. In the power options, you can restore all the settings to default. For that follow Step-1 to Step-3 and select Restore default settings for this plan.

Method 7 - Restore Windows Settings

This option is kind of cool as Windows allows you to restore its settings to previous settings plan making it a real fix for the problem. The best part is that no other file or document is touched everything remains the same but the settings change to default.

So follow the steps below to restore the settings without a fuss:

Step-1: First of all you have to go to Control Panel and then find the option Recovery.

Step-2: Click it and then click on open system restore. After that, you will see a screen full of options according to date and time.

Step-3: Choose the option where you didn’t face this problem, and your PC was working fine. After selecting that your PC will restart and restore all the previous settings from that date.

Method 8 - Reset Windows 10

If none of the methods work, then this one is your ultimate last option. By resetting you are installing a new copy of Windows 10 again on your PC. And after this, you will be asked whether you want to keep your file or want to delete them.

Just follow the steps below to do this:

Step-1: Go to Settings and then Update and Security.

Step-2: After that, click Recovery from the options and then select Reset this PC and click on Get started. The computer will confirm, whether you want to keep the files or remove them. Choose the option that best suits you and proceed from there.

After resetting you will get a fresh copy of Windows 10 on your PC. But I hope that it won’t have to come to this point.
