The best of the best? How much is that worth to you? At first glance, Bitdefender Total Security 2018 may seem like just another product in a sea of security solutions that are available on the market these days. But look closer, and you will find what is perhaps the most robust security suite around.

Bitdefender is a program that is unbeatable in the feature set it provides, and right up there at the top when it comes to offering protection against new and emerging threats.

It lacks in one or two areas, but overall, Bitdefender Total Security 2018 is about as good as it gets.

About Bitdefender

Bitdefender is a Romanian cybersecurity company, founded in 2001. It develops a range of antivirus, internet security, endpoint security and other similar products and services. Bitdefender platform leads its consumer line, which is available in some flavors — from a simple standalone antivirus to full suite encompassing PC and mobile devices.

The company boasts a user base of 500 million users, all of which are provided with updated malware definitions several times a day. And like most security programs, Bitdefender is available at a variety of price points, differentiated mostly by the number of devices covered by a license.

Bitdefender Total Security is the complete package, the 2018 version of which offers a stellar selection of extras backed by rock-solid antivirus protection.

This program can be termed as a kitchen sink security package, in that it provides traditional defense against virus and malware, but also throws in a whole range of additional features and options like a password manager, file shredder, ransomware protection, and parental controls.

The Installation

Installation is a little complex, yet still very much a streamlined affair. The number of steps involved depends on whether you are deploying a trial version of having purchased a license, but it usually entails installing the Bitdefender Agent first, which then downloads the product.

Expect a 400MB download, and anywhere from five to ten minutes installation time.

The setup process is the usual affair, but you will have to sign up for Bitdefender Central, a dedicated portal that the company has created to help users manage their devices, products, services, and subscriptions. It also provides access to exclusive offers and support.

Worth a mention that Bitdefender 2018 only works on newer versions of Windows, namely Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Windows XP and Windows Vista machines are not compatible, though the company also offers a unique product called Bitdefender Security for XP & Vista for these two operating systems

Bitdefender Total Security 2018 is also compatible with macOS, as well as Android and iOS.

About User Interface

Regarding UI, Bitdefender is more on the functional side of things, as opposed to stylish. It fits into the whole Windows 10 look well, and can almost be mistaken for a native Windows app.

Green and red colors are used to good effect here, while neatly placed icons in a subtle looking black and gray color scheme. Tiles guide you through the various sections, while a menu on the left houses all the features and panels in the program.

On the whole, things are attractive, and more importantly, clean.

The default Autopilot mode automatically takes care of everything and ensures that you will never see a notification or popup of any kind, and will not need to fiddle with a ton of controls. Navigation is a snap, and there is no frustrating loading of the modules — this is a very responsive app.

Features of Bitdefender Total Security 2018

Bitdefender offers one of the broadest arrays of protective functions. From an actively robust antivirus engine to malware scanning and ransomware protection. You also get access to a password manager, secure web browser, file shredder, virtual keyboard, WiFi scanner, rescue partition, parental controls, file encryption, webcam protection, an anti-theft module, and a firewall.

We’ll be taking a look at these, and more, in detail below.

Protection is where Bitdefender shines, offering you multiple types of scans, along with app, file and web protection modules. Quick Scan, as the name suggests, is rapid, and takes a look at all the essential places to locate any malware. You also get options for a full System Scan, or custom scans via the Manage Scans option.

The Quarantine holds suspicious content for you, submits files for analysis, and deletes content that is older than 30 days, though you can quickly change these settings.

The Safe Files feature is a ransomware protection module that preemptively blocks unknown applications from writing to particular folders without your explicit authorization. By default, it protects all the conspicuous locations, and you can add as many additional folders as you like. This feature is a simple measure that goes a long way to deny access to your precious data.

The WiFi Security Advisor looks for cracks in defense of your home network and notifies you if it finds any weaknesses.

A Firewall module helps keep your system secure by keep tabs on the two-way traffic. It is much more customizable than the default firewall on Windows and allows for a whole range of customization. You can quickly create rules for each application, but the included Stealth Mode is preferred if you want to fly under the radar and make your system invisible to the internet.

The Antispam and Web Protection features do as they say, and the Advanced Threat Defense panel provides you with everything you need to manage attacks on your device, including sophisticated ransomware threats.

Bitdefender also comes with a Quick Risk Checker packed in, and this handy little tool scans your system, looking for old and outdated software, missing updates, unsafe settings, and open WiFi points. Very thorough, and provides excellent recommendations.

One last feature worth mentioning is the built-in Rescue Environment. While most antivirus tools will let you boost from a safe CD or USB flash drive, Bitdefender cleverly sets up its rescue environment directly on your hard disk. You can use this to boot into your computer, in case anything goes wrong.

When it comes to privacy, the latest version of Bitdefender Total Security has got you covered. You get a reasonably powerful Password Manager in the form of a wallet database that simplifies online purchases and logins by automatically filling in your credentials and payment data directly into the web browser.

It works with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Internet Explorer, with support for Microsoft Edge coming soon.

File Encryption lets you create a File Vault, which you can use to store sensitive files and prevent data-stealing Trojans and another such type of malware from access them. These vaults act just like disk drives when unlocked, but offer zero access when locked.

Although entirely useful, and very handy, this is one area that can use improvements. That’s because there is no way to adjust the vault size, and if you outgrow that space, you will need to destroy that vault and move your data to a new, bigger one.

Webcam Protection is a new addition to the 2018 version, and it allows you to completely disable your camera to ensure that no one can spy on you.

There is an option only to block it for your web browser, or you can whitelist specific applications. You can also enable notifications that send you an immediate warning if something turns your camera.

SafePay is the browser that the company has designed for online shopping and banking. It works in fullscreen, blocks browser extensions, demands an encrypted HTTPS server link.

It guards against keyloggers by forcing you to enter your passwords using a virtual, onscreen keyboard. Back in your regular web browser, the Search Advisor extension puts green ticks or red crosses next to search results from Google, Bing, and Yahoo, and goes a long way in helping you steer clear of suspicious and iffy sites. Good stuff.

Bitdefender also comes with a few useful tools to help you manage your system and keep it running in optimum shape. First up is the OneClick Optimizer, which as the name gives away, quickly scans Windows and application problems, and offers to fix them.

Disk cleanup, registry tidying, or privacy clampdowns, they are all here, and you can quickly view details and optimize things after reviewing them.

A Startup Optimizer is also part of the package, which although not as fully featured as what you get with system tweaking utilities, is good enough to get the job done. It streamlines the boot sequence and tells you how long startup took the previous time.

Same goes for the Disk Cleanup tool that visually shows you how much of your disk space goes where.

Mobile Apps

A highlight of the Bitdefender Total Security suite is, of course, protection for multiple operating systems. While Windows is the most elaborate and feature-rich, there is substantial protection available for macOS too, from Safe Files to Time Machine Protection, malware detection to fortification against phishing, parental controls, and secure browsing.

Things thin down on the iOS side, and you only get antitheft parental controls and account privacy.

But Android, once again, brings advanced features into the mix, with the likes App Lock, Privacy Advisor, On-Demand and On-Install scans, Antitheft, and parental controls. All these solutions work fast and light and don’t impact the performance of your device, just like the PC version.

It brings us to what is, without doubt, the most critical consideration.

We define a security solution by its performance — how it catches threats, and how quickly it catches them. The most feature-rich program is not worth the price of admission if the company behind it is not up to the task of rolling out the latest definition, or the application itself is cumbersome and slows down systems.

Luckily, there is a good thing to report on this front, too.

Bitdefender offers excellent protection across the board, right up there with big names like Kaspersky and Norton. Definition updates are rolled out regularly to ensure that it is protecting you against all the latest and 0-day threats. Independents tests have listed Bitdefender at the top of the mountain.

The latest AV-Comparatives malware protection tests revealed Bitdefender as only one of four antivirus packages to achieve a 100% score. And the fact that Bitdefender did this without flagging a single false positive, just adds to its pedigree. It is something that no other security solution can claim. It also scored very heavily on performance tests, attaining very fast ratings for both launching and scanning.

Its signature Autopilot mode makes the software completely unobtrusive, and the program automatically decides what to block and what to allow, without involving you at all. Only significant incidents like suspected ransomware attacks will trigger notifications.

  Is Windows 10 Secure?

Value in terms of Cost

All said and done, Bitdefender Total Security 2018 stands tall as one of the best security solutions on the market. Excellent features aside, one factor that blots its copybook is that the suite is a bit more expensive than other big programs.

It also extends to how you get the program. The program automatically enrolls you for a subscription, and it processes the automatic renewals at a higher than listed price.

Still, regarding value, there are few security solutions better than Bitdefender Total Security, mainly if you own multiple devices and want protection for all your computers and mobile devices. The rich feature set, unbeatable protection, and breezy option make this one of the most elegant ways to stay safe in what is an increasingly uncertain online world.
